This show promises to rock. Obits, the band featuring Drive Like Jehu’s Rick Froberg, is playing the Crocodile on Friday night. The band is touring to support their latest Sub Pop release, Moody, Standard and Poor. Obits are also dear to this site, as we interviewed Froberg before his band played Capitol Hill Block Party last year. I wrote then:
Listening to Obits, you hear a garage punk sound with angular guitars from Froberg and(Sohrab) Habibion weaving in between one another and complimenting each other as beautifully as garage rock can be. When compared to Drive Like Jehu, Obits songs have more complete song structures (as did Hot Snakes). Froberg sees it as a matter of evolving technology. “The thing that changed is that you could record and practice a song a lot more easily, a lot more easily than you could have five years ago. It’s one thing to play and it’s another to listen to it,” he said.
Also on the bill are Disappears, a new-ish band from Chicago that features Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley.
The people from noisey.com, a new live music-focused venture from Vice, offered us a pair of tickets to one of our lucky readers to this show. If you’d like to be said lucky winner, please send an e-mail to anotherrainysaturday@gmail.com with “Obits rock” in the subject line before 9am on Friday morning (August 19). The winner’s name will be drawn at random and notified shortly thereafter. This show is 21+, so plan on being of drinking age before Friday evening.
If you don’t want to leave it up to chance, you can get tickets for $12 (plus some fees, but not Ticketmaster fees) here.
