Fly Moon Royalty’s sold out show Saturday night at the Comet had the makings of a great party. It was also the last time we’ll likely see this fast rising group in such a small space.
Fly Moon Royalty are Adra Boo, a voluptuous soul singer with a commanding voice and stage presence, and Action Jackson, producer, rapper and multi-instrumentalist. Its ideology, if not sound, is best summed up in one line from its best song, “Roxy.” Adra Boo sings, “See, I can move to hip hop; I can mosh to grunge rock; and when I hear electro pop, I can’t stop; an R&B child in the city, and if you don’t like me, tough titty.” The elements of soul, funk, R&B and hip hop are melded into one irresistible package and it makes FMR one of the most exciting bands to follow in the Northwest. Sportn’ Life Records are reissuing its excellent self-titled debut album in February.
After following a novelty-ish post-Ke$ha pop act, FMR’s set at the Comet began around 11:20pm with their song “Higher.” It was hot and crowded, but that was forgotten a few songs into FMR’s set when they hit their stride and continued throughout the night. The string of upbeat songs in the middle of the set with the reworking of single “Lemonade,” then “Android Love,” “Roxy” and “Do What You Say” was pretty much perfect.
A few times throughout the night, the group was joined by their friend Taryn Renee Dorsey, whose harmonies did a good job contrasting with and complementing Adra Boo’s vocals, as did Action Jackson’s rhymes. The newer songs, one I believe called “Push” and another called “Piece of Me,” which was performed on a local television morning show earlier this week, were well-received by the crowd which mostly wanted to dance all night, and they did.
Fly Moon Royalty played for an hour, their second show of they day (after also playing at Sea-Tac Airport to kick off the Seattle’s airport music initiative) and when they finished around 12:20, the party continued with a DJ (who also opened the show) playing 1990s R&B hits into the early morning, or at least last call.
{Fly Moon Royalty next plays at Dancing on the Valentine on Friday, February 10 at the Crocodile and at the Neptune on Thursday, February 16 with Pickwick.}

These guys sound sweet! I’ll definitely check them out.
