Today, the Seattle Office of Film and Music announced they were launching an initiative to bring the sounds of Seattle’s music scene to Sea-Tac Airport. Its website says:
The Sea-Tac Airport Music Initiative | Experience the City of Music is a cooperative effort by the Port of Seattle, The Office of Film + Music, Seattle Music Commission and music-specialist PlayNetwork to showcase the northwest region’s music culture and enhance the experience of millions of passengers who pass through Sea-Tac Airport each year. This unique, comprehensive project brings music to your ears via speakers and video screens airport-wide featuring the region’s diverse variety of music through:
- overhead music in the terminal
- artist-read public announcements
- feature videos on terminal and baggage claim monitors
- local music web player via the airport’s free wifi (debuts Saturday, January 28)
While this is a good start to introducing the delicate sounds of Seattle to travellers passing through Sea-Tac, and who knows, maybe the weary traveller will become Allen Stone’s newest superfan, I still think there are more things that can be done to extend the initiative. Here are some of my ideas:
- Commission a rap and viral video from Macklemore about the importance of airport security and the neccessity and efficacy of backscatter machines. “When I say ‘Tee,’ you say ‘Ess Ayyyy!’”
- Special shelf of pharmaceuticals at Hudson News curated by The Pharmacy
- Special VIP service where Seattle music bigshots will personally ask to hold an airplane on your behalf if you’re running late. “Yo, this is Blake Lewis, season six runner up on ‘American Idol,’ and my man [your name here] ran into some serious ish with his carry-on bag. Can you hold the plane for another ten minutes or so?”
- Luggage handled by actual members of Candlebox
- ‘S’ Gate formally renamed “The Gerard Schwarz Honorary Gate”
- Hype! is the in-flight movie on every flight flying into or out of Sea-Tac
- Acoustic sets by up and coming folk singers at gates of delayed flights
- Bigfoot Food & Spirits is now Sasquatch! Food & Spirits
