The popular dubstep producer Skrillex is just about the biggest thing in “music kids are listening to these days” and he’s in the middle of playing four nights in New York. The reviews for the first night at Webster Hall, and at least two reviews have said basically the same thing as Danny Glover in one of the Lethal Weapon movies, “I’m too old for this shit.”
The increasingly-embarrassing Grantland sent a writer (who wears sunglasses in his author photo, so he’s at least cool) to the Skrillex show, and he began by writing, “One thing about being 27 is that you’re definitely old enough to be allowed to flippantly dismiss things high school kids are into, but not necessarily old enough to want to flippantly dismiss things high school kids are into.” He did just that, but claimed to be objective and wrote, “But it’s one thing to stodgily respect youthful decision making and another to actually sign off on it. Last night I entered the crucible of Skrillex, trying to — hoping to! — come out a convert.” The rest was just some condescending reporting about the young people who were Skrillex fans. “One girl has an inflatible pirate sword.”
Gawker’s piece was called “Feeling Old at the Skrillex Show.” It was a little less condescending to the crowd, except for one guy with an awful tattoo, but the old-mannishness came out when it said, “The doors didn’t open until 11pm, which is my bedtime most weeknights. This late hour was obviously calculated to ensure a crowd of only the young, unemployed, and irresponsible.”
But we need three for a trend. Fortunately, with Skrillex playing four New York shows, it shouldn’t take long for one of those annoying young peoples to show where they aren’t welcome, like on the Brooklyn Vegan’s lawn.
