Diplo called his new song with Usher, “Climax,” “seriously the best record I’ve been part of.” Who am I to argue? It’s certainly one of the best songs of the year and should be remembered as the slow jam of 2012. Fittingly, it was released (or deliberately leaked) on Valentine’s Day last week.
What I like so much about this song is that it is Diplo coming to R&B and still working within its framework. When Usher’s falsetto kicks in, the electronic beat is present, but never overpowering – yet you’ll still notice different things in the production each listen. What makes “PBR&B” (particularly The Weeknd) so frustrating is that eschews the sex and romance and pretends they don’t exist. That’s not the case with “Climax,” and it’s for the better. Instead, it’s a slow-burning jam that has “hit” written all over it. I can’t wait to hear it regularly on the radio.
