Another Perfect Crime is the antithesis of “Boys Night”

For the past six years, Another Perfect Crime has been one of the most underrated bands in Seattle. The four piece band is one of the bands I probably would have written about if I were still a writer at ROCKRGRL magazine (which folded, unfortunately, in 2005 and the band formed in 2006). APC has a catchy, indie pop sound that ventures into dream pop territory at times, while firmly remaining a post-riot grrrl band in theory and practice. The band is releasing their new album, You Have to Care, today and celebrating its release on Thursday Wednesday at the Crocodile.

I know invoking riot grrrl is frowned upon, but APC will remind you of Sleater-Kinney at times, particularly when they use overlapping harmonies. On the song “Boys Night,” (nearly) every insult female musicians have thrown at them is repeated as lyrics, usually prefaced with “You’re not sexist, it’s just…” It makes it all the more effective by showing how absurd and patronizing the insults and backhanded compliments are, while also having ”Boys Night” be a pretty great pop rock song. It’s very catchy with a message that’s important to take note of. The band is very DIY, including making their own merch, and the CD of You Have to Care includes its own zine.

The ladies of Another Perfect Crime began playing together, first as a three piece, after meeting at the Ladies Rock Camp in Portland. Since then, bassist Natalie Walker was one of the founders of the Rain City Rock Camp for Girls in 2009. All members of the band are also involved in volunteering for the camp and lending their time to mentoring young girls. Their album is called You Have to Care, and they clearly do.

{Another Perfect Crime’s CD release party is Thursday, June 28 Wednesday, June 27 at the Crocodile with Cumulus and Tape Stacks, 8pm doors, all ages, $10 tickets available here.}
